Gertrude married Arvid Back, probably in the late 1920s. The couple moved to Fort Langley in the 1930s and farmed 22 acres on Allard Crescent. Arvid had the foreshore rights to the Fraser River at this property and built gill-netters out of his boatshed on the water. They had a daughter named Judy.
