Description

Black and white photograph of young women who have graduated from the Hi-Y Group, taken at St. Andrew's Anglican Church. There are two rows of young women, and the first row is kneeling while the back row stands. They are all wearing light coloured tops with flower corsages pinned to the tops, and dark coloured skirts. Some young women are holding thin scrolls. From left to right in the back row are: Joan Dier, Shirley Baker (née Burdett), Marg Sampson, Marg McLellan, Sharon Craig, Louise Acheson, Mrs. Grasdal, Lil Smaback, Phyllis Zaitzoff, Sylvia Sorenson, Audrey Norman, and Maureen Snyder. Left to right in the front row are: Doreen Milne, Marguerite Armistead, Lonnie Beaulieu, Nancy Hurschmann, Aileen Sater, Betty Logan, Janet Chahley, Elayne Snell, and Joan Wyschaynski.

Baker, Shirley

Shirley Ann Marjorie Burdett was born in Vancouver on March 10, 1936. Shirley was a granddaughter of the pioneering Burdett family who settled in West Langley on McClughan Road (88th Ave.) near the Surrey border in about 1920. She married Roy Baker on May 12, 1956. Roy came from a pioneer family in the Willoughby area, and the pioneering Treliving family of West Langley. Roy and Shirley had two children, Linda and David.
In 2006-07 Shirley received recognition from the Fraser Health Region in the category of Service Delivery for more than 30 years as the coordinator of baby clinics in Langley. She volunteered or was a member of many other organizations including the Willoughby Women's Institute, Willoughby Hall Society, Arthritis Society, Langley Seniors Society, TOPS, Langley Heritage Society, Langley Centennial Museum's History Group, the 1952 Langley High School grad Class Reunion group, and early morning swim groups. Shirley passed away June 11, 2009.

HI-Y group

Saint Andrew's Anglican Church

Constructed in Langley Prairie in 1922 on land donated by farmer Brian Harrison on the north side of the Yale Road at Telephone Road (206th). Both church and a vicarage were constructed through the efforts of volunteers. The church remained in use for 57 years (it was destroyed by fire in 1979).
