People/Subject
Yurik, John
John Yurik was born in Golden, BC to parents Frank and Sophia Yurik on November 19, 1924. He had two siblings, Mary (b. 1922) and Lewis (b. 1928). Frank worked in Sandon, BC (where Lewis was born), for several years, and when the railway there closed in 1940 he was moved to Nakusp. In the spring of 1931 Sophia and the three children settled on a 30 acre farm in Langley that the family bought from Pete Mikustak of Queensborough. The mortgage for the property was held by Mr. William Harris, who owned the farm across the street (Carvolth Road). While Sophia and the children ran the farm, with five or six cows, a large garden, haying and wood cutting, Frank continued working in Sandon and later Nakusp. Although his money paid the mortgage, he was only able to get home to visit the family once a year. The children attended West Langley School and Langley High School. When Frank retired from the railway he did not want to live on the farm, so in 1942 Sophia and the two youngest boys moved to Nakusp. Mary went to St. Paul's Hospital School of Nursing at this time. The Langley farm was rented for a few years until son Lewis took it over in the early 1950s. John married Winnie Roach (b. 1926 in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia).
