Item has four components (a-box, b-glass jar, c-glass jar, d-plastic container); leather box (a) contains various compartments to hold toilet articles including toothbrush, jars and other items; the box is secured with a metal locking mechanism and has a leather handle on the top for carrying; the handle is secured with brass buttons; when open the front panel of the box flips out to reveal an additional compartment under the toothbrush compartment; in this compartment there are 2 leather slings to secure an item to the inside of the front panel; the top panel of the box contains 3 smaller leather slings for tweezers, scissors, razors and the like; as the item was used by the donor it is likely this was a woman's toilet kit in particular; a long and slender compartment holds a clear plastic toothbrush container (d) with no toothbrush inside; in the large main compartment there are 2 large leather slings which hold 2 glass jars; glass jar "c" is labelled "Bay Rum", handwritten in pencil on a small sticker label; bay rum was commonly used as an astringent or fragrance; the jar is narrow at the mouth and much of the mouth is broken off; it's metal lid contains the broken vestiges of glass and can be fitted loosely onto the jar; the jar itself has some designs reminiscent of a perfume jar; inside the jar on the bottom are the remains of the bay rum; glass jar "b" is labelled "Camphorated chalk.", handwritten in pencil on a small sticker label; the chalk was commonly used as a dentifrice as well as in other cosmetic and medical applications; the jar is 3/4 filled with the chalk; the jar is cylindrical with designs reminiscent of a salt shaker; a metal lid is fitted onto the top of the jar which cannot be opened without force; plastic container "d" is long and narrow and would have contained a toothbrush or other dental device with chalk or toothpaste remains inside; the container is opened on the long side; a small bent brass button lies inside the large main compartment.
