Spence family
Peter Spence (1849-1939, born in the Orkney Islands) arrived in Vancouver, B.C., in 1883 and later purchased 160 acres in the Coghlan, B.C., area, at which point his wife Jane joined him from Scotland. He built the Coghlan General Store and many of the early houses. They had three sons, William, James, and Peter, all of whom worked on the farm.
Spence, James
James Spence (b. 1900) was the son of Peter and Jane Spence. He lived on his family's farm in Coghlan, and died in 1949.
Spence, Jane
Jane Spence came to Langley to marry her husband, Peter Spence. They lived in Coghlan and had three sons: William (b.1989), James (b.1900), and Peter Jr. (b.1903). Jane and Peter ran a pig and cattle farm with their family.
Spence, Peter
Peter Spence was born in 1849 in the Orkney Islands in Scotland. He travelled to Canada by way of the U.S.A and arrived in Vancouver in 1883 where he worked as a carpenter. He travelled up the Fraser River to Langley aboard the "Ramona", where he bought 160 acres of land in Coghlan, and built a split-log shack. Shortly after he sent to Scotland for Jane, who would become his wife. The couple had three children, William (b. 1898), James (b.1900), and Peter Jr. (b.1903). Peter worked as a carpenter, building the Coghlan General Store, and the Forman House, as well as many two-level homes in the area. He also owned the first horse in the area. Peter also raised pigs and cattle, worked as a net foreman in fish canneries, and was a trustee for East Langley School. He died in 1939 at the age of 90.
Spence, William (Bill)
William "Bill" Spence was born in Langley in 1898 to parents Peter and Jane Spence. He served with the 72nd Division Seaforth Highlanders in World War I, and returned to Coghlan in 1919. He met Florence Mouncer in London during the War, and wrote her letters to convince her to come to Langley. She did, and they married in 1920. The couple had three children: Ernest, Bill, and Julia. They moved from the family farm to Telegraph Trail, before settling on Armstrong Road. Bill earned his living through fishing and logging. Bill died in 1970.
