Alfred Trattle and William John Trattle in Sailor Suits. Alf and William were brothers, the sons of Alfred and Emma Elizabeth Trattle. When the Fort Langley cenotaph was unveiled on 24 April 1920, with Bishop A. U. de Pencier and other clergymen officiating, Alf and William Trattle were given the honour of unveiling the monument, pulling away a large Union Jack to reveal the Celtic cross beneath. The boys' paternal grandmother had sent them a steady supply of sailor suits, and as they were the sons of a fallen soldier, they were an obvious choice for the task. Their grandmother apparently had quite a military bent, with at least one member of the family in England serving in the Coldstream Guards.
